MIU MEDICAL ISOLATION UNIT

POWERTRONIX low impedance MIUs - Medical Isolation Units - provide protection from overload and short circuit conditions, they completely eliminate ground-loop problems and insulate connected equipment against potentially harmful leakage currents. Using POWERTRONIX  medical transformers, these units ensure clean, safe power, where and when it is needed most. POWERTRONIX MIUs are available in computer gray metal enclosures, and they are provided with hospital grade receptacles.

A variety of voltage ratings, enclosures, connectors, and features (such as over-temperature protection, ground-fault interruption, and soft start) are available.

APPLICATIONS
POWERTRONIX MIUs are used with medical and dental instruments, EEG monitors, electro-surgical equipment, medical lasers, NMR equipment, scanners and ultrasonic devices.

A    EMERGENCY CIRCUIT BREAKER
A breaker that will cut power to the MIU and its output in the event of an emergency. As a safety precaution, the unit can only be restarted by powering the system off (from the AC mains) and re-booting, once this breaker has been tripped.

B    CIRCUIT BREAKER
A 2-pole, current limiting, rocker type on/off breaker for standard operation.

C    INPUT PROTECTION
In order to assure the safety of the MIU and its load, this component protects the input from short circuit conditions on the output. In addition, it provides protection from ground fault interruptions that can lead to dangerous line-to-ground and shock hazard currents, as well as electrical fires.

D    SOFT START
A standard feature in all POWERTRONIX MIUs with a power rating greater than 2 kVA. It facilitates a smooth start up, by restraining damaging in-rush currents.

*      ISOLATION TRANSFORMER/FILTER
This is the core of the POWERTRONIX MIU, and it incorporates components E and F that provide over-temperature protection and low frequency noise suppression, respectively. Components E and F are integrated within a low impedance, highly insulated and well-shielded POWERTRONIX Toroidal Transformer, which itself eliminates ground-loop problems, insulates connected equipment against potentially harmful leakage currents, and provides extended brownout range.

E      THERMAL PROTECTION
A resetable thermal switch that automatically shuts off the power to the unit and connected equipment at a set temperature. The shut off temperature is based on the class of insulation in the toroidal transformer, as well as the application for which the unit is intended. Typically, the switch will trip at 110°C, and allow for restart once the unit has cooled down to approximately 70°C.

F     NON-LINEAR FILTER
This element prevents low frequency noise (<3 kHz) from reaching the sensitive load.

G    HIGH FREQUENCY SUPPRESSION
This module limits EMI and RFI, in addition to other high frequency noise (2.5 kHz to 300MHz), from reaching the sensitive load.

All data are typical values and subject to change without prior notice.

Industrial grade isolation units are also available for applications that do not require UL 2601 approval and where a leakage current of more than 100 µA is acceptable.

Custom designed Medical Isolation Units are also available!
